Hello there, long time no see! I'm not dead, just busy with life... but I've had the time to ran some Rainmeter statistics through as a curiosity.
I've basically gathered 2 sets of data.
What I've done is bascially get metadata from every single skin off the Official Rainmeter DeviantArt group, including their metadata too, and coverted them to a JSON database file.
The date of this analysis is off information gathered on the 03rd of April 2025.
I don't really have more to say, so I'll just jump straight to the data.
Let's start with TOPs. I've made a top 25 of most relevant data from different statistics that can be measured, like downloads, size, skins uploaded etc.
Top 25 Most Downloaded Skins on DeviantArt
Top 25 Most Viewed Skins on DeviantArtTop 25 Most Favourited Skins on DeviantArtTop 25 Most Commented On Skins on DeviantArtTop 25 LARGEST Skins (in bytes) on DeviantArtYup, the top one is a wopping 700MB, that's crazy.
Top 25 Authors with most Skins published on DeviantArtThis number is a bit skewed since there are creators in here that were not in the Rainmeter DeviantArt group. If we included works outside the group, TheWolfBunny64 would have topped the charts with over 800 skins, however, I can't seem to find their account anymore sadly.
The 25 Oldest Skins published on DeviantArtSurpisingly, the very first skin in this list, made in 2005, still works! I guess this is what prioritizing backwards compatbility (where resonable) achieves.
Welp, we're done with the TOPs. I wanted to go onto something else, more specifically, the tags, genres etc. These are not tops this time and just a limited number of toggles. Without further ado...
What Years were skins most published in?If you plot the numbers, onto a graph, it makes a bell curve, so we can make a summary about the Standard Deviation too.
Since 2025 is still onging, we're gonna exclude it. The values for Descriptive Statistics are:Boooooooring
Top Genres Used on Skins on DeviantArtHuh, wait a minute, that's 3338 skins in total, but the Rainmeter group says that there are 4439 skins... what the hell is happening?
Well, the sad reality is that - on DeviantArt - the numbers in galleries don't update for deleted or privated posts, they're still counted and there's currently 1101 posts by disactivated/deleted accounts in the DeviantArt group. The only way we could get more info on this is if I was an admin on the group to get info off ghost posts (since you can do it as admin in a group but not a normal user... whatever), but I don't really wanna bother getting that info. Anyways, back to more info.
For these next statistics, you just need to focus on the Sum value.
How many Comments have been made in total on all Skins on DeviantArt?How many Downloads have been made in total on all Skins on DeviantArtHow much Love has been shown to Skins on DeviantArtHow much would it take (in bytes) to store all skins off DeviantArt?Yup, that's right, you would need 11 TeraBytes to re-host all Rainmeter Skins publically availiable, do you have the money?
Data got from External sources
Well, that's everything DeviantArt... you thought I was done? There's more, GitHub allows us to see the number of Downloads for each release, although some numbers might be skewed because of some factors (and as of very recently, the latest release might have a lower decrease/higher increase in downloads beause the installer was marked as malware, so the file was deleted and redownloaded the next time the PC was open, just to get marked as malware again, or people denied Rainmeter from installing an update completly)
I'm not gonna code this, just go here and look for yourself, but to make a short summary for the most recent Final ReleasesWoah there's roughly 4 million of us today... or 1 million of us... or 8 million of us... or 10 million, any way you put it, we're basically more people than the Vatican City.
Still not done, Google Trends exist too, we're basically gonna sum Google's weird Search Score statistic per month to get a rough aproximation of when people were searching the most for RainmeterSince it roughly matches the form of Skins Uploaded, with it being a bell curve too, I'm not gonna bother writing the data.
Other data
There are also more places that I have not checked, for example, Rainmeter got popular on TikTok because of the Mond skin... why that single one? I don't know and I don't care, but it's (percieved) to be the most popular skin right now, so congrats to the author for making something that is the force that got us those 4 million downloads... or was it 1 million downloads?
There are places that also used to host skins but are now no longer in use, LifeHacker used to host skins, but then it was bought by Flicker and now no longer hosts skins, you can just look at the images, something akin to /r/Desktops or /r/Rainmeter.
Speaking of places that no longer exist...
Secret forgoten data???
Well, that's all, there is one more statistic we could have gotten, but it is lost to time.
While Rainmeter has minimal telemetry today, with the only telemetry being a single call to https://rainmeter.github.io/rainmeter/status.json, which I don't know if it's done through CloudFlare and/or GitHub, but it is done every time you open Rainmeter and it dose the Version Update code (some people consider this telemetry and I would do too since I haven't used Wireshark to see what's passed in the Headers). Beaside that, the philosophy of the Rainmeter dev team is that they are 0% personal data hungry, which I like... but they used to get some info at one time.
If you look at the strings for the Installer, you will find these 2 stringsYup, previously you could have optionally sent some info to the Rainmeter team, and the info went to http://rainmeter.net/stat/ (which reddirects to localhost right now). This toggle was last seen in the Rainmeter 2.5 Installer, but it's long gone now. Curiously, the removal of this feature isn't mentioned anywhere in the Version History page, but it exists as a commit.
To put into perspective, this feature existed during the phase in the Windows lanscape where everything was a mess, Microsoft was trying to get people to stop using Windows XP and use Windows 7/8, just for them to stick to using XP because they didn't have the money to buy new performant hardware that was able to run the latest versions of Windows. Thankfully we're 15 years removed from that time and we are no longer in a scenario similar to this one.

I was actually making some cool Rainmeter projects before life got in the way, it's why I have info from all 3383 projects on DeviantArt which I want to make public, but I can't find and make a data filter component modal for Blazor or Node.js to make seraching this data easy.

There are also more places that I have not checked, for example, Rainmeter got popular on TikTok because of the Mond skin... why that single one? I don't know and I don't care, but it's (percieved) to be the most popular skin right now, so congrats to the author for making something that is the force that got us those 4 million downloads... or was it 1 million downloads?
There are places that also used to host skins but are now no longer in use, LifeHacker used to host skins, but then it was bought by Flicker and now no longer hosts skins, you can just look at the images, something akin to /r/Desktops or /r/Rainmeter.
Speaking of places that no longer exist...

Well, that's all, there is one more statistic we could have gotten, but it is lost to time.
While Rainmeter has minimal telemetry today, with the only telemetry being a single call to https://rainmeter.github.io/rainmeter/status.json, which I don't know if it's done through CloudFlare and/or GitHub, but it is done every time you open Rainmeter and it dose the Version Update code (some people consider this telemetry and I would do too since I haven't used Wireshark to see what's passed in the Headers). Beaside that, the philosophy of the Rainmeter dev team is that they are 0% personal data hungry, which I like... but they used to get some info at one time.
If you look at the strings for the Installer, you will find these 2 strings

Thankfully we're 15 years removed from that time and we are no longer in a scenario similar to this one.

As an ending to this, I hate working and I really wish I had more free time, but I can't make money passively. I was actually making some cool Rainmeter projects before life got in the way, it's why I have info from all 3383 projects on DeviantArt which I want to make public, but I can't find and make a data filter component modal for Blazor or Node.js to make seraching this data easy.
